A Sea Bass mapping project supported by the European Union

Aims:

Sea bass is the target of a growing aquaculture industry on the Mediterranean and the SE-Atlantic coast. A conspicuous deficit in this industry is the absence of selection programmes and the appropriate scientific genetic base. For the first time, we will make a genetic and synteny map of sea bass, which will provide the basis for an enhanced selection program.

The proposal involves...

  1. the breeding of a test panel of sea bass parents and their progeny
  2. the preparation of a genome bank, and the development of many markers of three different kinds
  3. the screening of the panel with these newly developed markers
  4. the preparation of a genotype data bank and the construction of the map proper
  5. the demonstration of our project in an industrial environment

This objective information will directly benefit the aquaculture industry and in the long run fisheries management.
